Emergency Medical Team
The ED is fully staffed by Board Certified Emergency Physicians and Pediatricians supported by specially trained Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs).
We follow a TEAM care model (team-based, proactive care) with Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Emergency Department Technicians working together to care for groups of patients, providing a comprehensive approach to care and treatment. Often our care team begins with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel before you reach the hospital by ambulance. We're always in communication with incoming ambulances and we're prepared for patient arrivals.
Nurse First
What you can expect when you come to the MedStar Montgomery Medical Center Emergency Services Department:
- Upon arrival at the ED, a registered nurse will see incoming patients and assess them using a 5-tier triage system called the Emergency Severity Index (ESI).
- During this triage process, the nurse will conduct a brief registration and identify the care area for treatment. A more complete registration will be completed later in the visit.
- The most emergent patients will be seen first, such as those showing Chest Pain or Stroke-like symptoms. For those emergent patients, Protocols will be started and care customized within minutes.
- If the nurse determines that your medical need is less urgent, you may be asked to sit in the lobby until an ED bed is available.
