Outpatient Treatment
Sometimes, instead of needing to be hospitalized for your cancer treatment (known as inpatient treatment), you are able to come to the hospital, receive your treatment and leave that same day. This is called outpatient treatment.
What to Expect from Outpatient Treatment
At MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, our staff is dedicated to making your treatment day as easy and painless as possible. Some features of our outpatient treatment include:
- Easy access and close parking. Park easily and come right in to the treatment center.
- Direct entrance to outpatient service areas and isolation room. This avoids unnecessary exposure to acutely ill patients. You come directly into the area where you receive the treatment, avoiding other areas of the hospital.
- Privacy. Each infusion station provides you with the privacy you need, and provides the nursing staff with a clear view of each patient. This way, the nurses can observe and respond to needs and requests as needed.
Infusion Center
This is where your outpatient treatment takes place. Each time you come to the Infusion Center, the nurses will weigh and measure you. Your dose of medication is based on your weight and height, so it is important that the numbers be exact. Our pharmacists prepare your dose carefully, and our chemotherapy-certified nurse's administer the dosage. The staff will monitor your closely during treatment because your immune system is especially sensitive during this time.
Since a treatment session can last a few hours, bring books or music to help pass the time.
