Motion-Sparing Spinal Surgery: A New Option for Back Surgery
Spine surgeries can relieve your severe back pain, but traditional fusion procedures can limit movement. When spine surgery risks destabilizing the spinal column, vertebrae are joined together (spinal fusion) to provide support. While strengthening the area, fusion also restricts motion. Fusion might limit your ability to bend or turn your neck fully.
MedStar Montgomery offers a state-of-the-art surgical techniques that preserve your range of motion. If you suffer from any of the following conditions, motion-sparing spinal surgery may help you get you back to the activities you enjoy:
Whether you are considering motion-sparing spinal surgery, microscopic or minimally-invasive surgery, or a traditional spine procedure, MedStar Montgomery’s interdisciplinary team of orthopedic experts will take the time to discuss all of your surgical options and help you chose an approach that fits your lifestyle.
Motion-Sparing Spinal Surgeries Offered at MedStar Montgomery
Our fellowship-trained neurosurgeons use motion-sparing techniques in several new spine procedures including:
- Cervical artificial disk replacement for herniated disks, an alternative to fusion procedures that use metallic plates and screws with bone grafts to stabilize the cervical spine. An artificial disk is inserted to replace the degenerated or herniated disk without limiting your range of motion.
- Laminoplasty for cervical spinal stenosis performed without fusing neck vertebrae. This procedure can correct cervical spinal stenosis without limiting your ability to fully turn your neck.
