About the Gifts of Light CeremonyWB_Candle_green

The "Gifts of Light" ceremony was initiated in December 1985 by Anne Willson who was president of the Women's Board. She learned about the program through the Maryland Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. Anne presented the idea to the Women's Board and it was readily accepted. Sue Connor, a long-time member of the Board, chaired the event and continued doing so for nine years. Jane Mead designed and drew the first candle which became the symbol for the "Gifts of Light".

In the beginning, the ceremony was held on the 1st Tuesday in December, but in recent years was moved to the 1st Sunday in December. Over the years, entertainment has been by people connected with the hospital and community. Church choirs (adult and children), high school and middle school choral groups have performed. One year there was an essay contest where students wrote about "Gifts of Light" and what it means. String ensembles and soloists have also performed. Anne Willson and Joan Derrick traditionally sing "O Holy Night" during the illumination of the "Gifts of Light". After the ceremony, everyone is invited to share in refreshments provided by the Women's Board members.

Through Anne Willson's leadership efforts and those who followed her as Women's Board presidents, as well as Sue Connor's faithful dedication and other board members who have chaired the event, "Gifts of Light" has been a successful avenue which not only involves the community but has also enabled the Women's Board to support the hospital through its many worthwhile projects. In recent years, the hospital's Foundation board has been a vital partner with the Women's Board by providing printing and mailing services for the "Gifts of Light" program.

Please enjoy photos throughout the years!
